Where are ADA Braille Signs required?

First of all, you require to have ADA Signs in your facility to designate a permanent space in a building. To clarify, this means that you need to install ADA Braille Signs at all spaces that will maintain the same function for more than 7 days. Furthermore, ADA Signs are required when an area of the building pertains to safety. For example, you’ll need to install ADA Signs next to elevators, fire exits, stairways etc.

Now you might be wondering, what happens to a space that will be in use for 7 days or less? The answer is very simple and this means that you do not require ADA Compliant Signs. Furthermore, they are not required outside a building and in areas that are not meant for public use, for example a home office. Just keep in mind that even though they are not required by law, it might be beneficial to invest in some kind of signage for identification purpose.

In which buildings do I require ADA Signs?

After having determined where ADA Signs are or aren’t required, let’s find out in which buildings these rules apply.

1. ADA Compliant Signs are required in all state, county and local government facilities. There are only two exceptions which include, prisons and buildings eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
2. ADA Compliant Signs are also required in all public accommodations and commercial facilities, including the below.
– Restaurants and Bars
– Sales & Retail Facilities
– Other facilities whose operations affect commerce
– Places of lodging
– Theaters & Cinemas
– Recreation facilities & parks
– Assembly areas
– Private museums
– Places of education
– Service Establishments
– Office buildings
– Factories & manufacturing plants
– Warehouses
– Public areas of apartment and multi-family facilities
– Commercial areas that are connected to private residences
To this rule there is only one exception which are religious institutions as they do not need to comply with the signs described in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
